How to keep your child busy in the car without a screen? 7 Montessori tips
Vacation time is approaching and the fateful question returns: "How am I going to keep my child busy for 4 hours on the road without giving them a tablet?". At Royaume Montessori, we believe that the journey is an integral part of the adventure.
For parents looking to limit screen time while encouraging development, there are simple solutions based on Montessori pedagogy. The idea is to offer activities that stimulate your child's curiosity and fine motor skills, even in a confined space.
1. The surprise bag: the magic of discovery
Prepare a small fabric bag containing 5 to 6 objects unknown to the child (a small figurine, a seashell, a different texture). The child must guess what they are touching without looking. This is an excellent sensory exercise that immediately calms agitation.
2. The Car Track: the ideal travel companion
Contrary to popular belief, some construction sets are perfect for travel. Our Montessori car track is particularly popular for its modularity.
The field tip
The child can assemble a few tracks on their lap (or on a small travel tray) and make the vehicles move. This requires intense concentration and precise movements that make time pass much faster.
3. The "I spy" game: observation and language
A Montessori classic for developing vocabulary. "I spy something blue, that rolls...". The child has to scan the landscape. This forces them to connect with the outside world rather than being glued to a screen.
4. Portable sorting trays
Use a compartment box (like a jewelry or screw box) filled with small items to sort. This is the logical continuation of the activities for 3-5 year olds that we recommend for working on patience.
